
Meet the Committee
SEMLA was founded in 2017 by Usman Tariq, Sheekha Saha, Naeema Sajid, Omar Ali and Imran Bashir. SEMLA's committee now comprises of Usman, Sheekha, Rupa Mooker and Jamila Archibald-Ramage.

Usman Tariq KC
Usman is an Advocate at the Scottish Bar. He is a member of Ampersand Advocates. He specialises in commercial litigation and public law. He has held a large number of professional appointments in his career, including Counsel to the UK Covid-19 Public Inquiry, Standing Junior Counsel to the Advocate General for Scotland and Advocate Depute at the Crown Office. He is the Chair of JUSTICE Scotland, a law reform organisation working to build a fair justice system in Scotland within everyone’s reach. He is a member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh's Young Academy of Scotland. He is an alumnus of the U.S. Department of State's International Visitors Leadership Program (IVLP). He is passionate about improving diversity and inclusion in the legal profession in Scotland. He co-founded SEMLA in 2017. He was a member of the Law Society of Scotland's Racial Inclusion Group and a current member of the Scottish Government's Future of the Legal Profession short-life working group and the Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland's Diversity Reference Group.

Rupa Mooker
Rupa specialised in employment law after qualifying as a solicitor, and has advocated for diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) within the legal profession since her career began. Her work in mental health and wellbeing, increasing representation of individuals from ethnically diverse backgrounds, and improving socio-economic diversity, within workplaces led to her career progressing in the DEI space where she now drives policy both locally and globally at Ashurst. She volunteers on several committees including SEMLA, Action for Children (Scotland National Advisory), the BBC Scottish Advisory Committee on Religion & Ethics, and the EDI & Engagement Committee for the Commonwealth Games Glasgow 2026. Rupa is also a BBC Scotland contributor, speaker and events host, award-winning radio presenter, and volunteers at her local Gurdwara, advising young people on employability and career matters. She also features as a prominent Scottish Sikh woman in the 'Sikh Women Speak' report which was launched at the Scottish Parliament in 2021.

Jamila Archibald-Ramage
Jamila is an in-house senior legal counsel, skilled in communication, leadership, presentation skills, teamwork, and creative problem solving. She holds a First class Bachelor of Laws and Diploma in Professional Legal Practice from the University of Edinburgh. She is a tutor and Board member of the Advancement Advisory Board at the University of Edinburgh. She is the winner of the 2025 Law Society of Scotland in-house rising star award. She is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion and encouraging all to start a conversation about change.

Sheekha Saha
Sheekha is a Senior Solicitor with Moray Council, based in their Elgin office. She has almost 25 years in-house practice, covering various areas of Local Authority legal practice, but with a focus on Litigation and Social Work law. Outside the ‘day job’, she is a co-founder of SEMLA. She is one of the elected Members to the Law Society of Scotland’s governing Council and sits on a number of the Society’s Committees, including Child & Family Law, Access to Justice, Public Policy. She is a former co-convener the In-house Lawyers Committee. She is passionate about in-house legal practice and celebrating the in-house legal community. Sheekha was awarded the Herald Law Awards’ In-house Lawyer of the Year in 2022.
